England, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Rihanna. Just some of the visitors to the Cricket World Cup in Durham this summer. Add to that Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe encouraging thousands to run. Our one millionth visitor to Lumiere, the country’s largest light festival which has celebrated its tenth year with plans in place for 2021. A world heritage site, award winning museums and one of the richest men in the country investing in culture-led regeneration. Did we mention refurbished leisure centres, co-located with libraries and customer service points? There’s a lot going on in Durham and we’re looking for a new Head of Culture, Sport and Tourism to drive us forward and deliver more.
County Durham is a fantastic place in which to live, work and visit, with a mix of heritage, natural beauty and huge potential that makes the place unmistakeable. It is a beautiful and diverse county from the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the west to the Heritage Coastline in the east and is the home to a range of treasures including Durham Cathedral and Castle, Auckland Castle, Bowes and Beamish museums, Locomotion and the Emirates Riverside international cricket ground.
Our natural and cultural assets create opportunity, but Durham also faces many challenges with communities affected by poor health, housing and employment prospects. Our key role is to work with partners to tackle these issues, improve opportunities for local people, and lead the development of new strategies to improve quality of life.
Culture, sport and tourism are key, and we are making significant progress in attracting visitors and raising our profile nationally and internationally as a leading centre for culture, with experiences that match the best England has to offer.
We are an ambitious council. We want to protect and enhance our core heritage and natural assets. We want to provide a programme of cultural and sporting events and activities to promote the whole county. And we want to help local people to be healthy and active, by providing exciting, high quality and affordable leisure facilities to meet their needs.
As our Head of Culture, Sport and Tourism, you will be instrumental in helping us achieve that and our vision for a bright and prosperous county by 2035.
We need someone who has vision, energy, creativity, resilience and an absolute focus on delivering the best possible outcomes for our residents and communities. If that’s you, we look forward to hearing from you.
Terry Collins, Chief Executive
