Welcome from John Pearce, Corporate Director of Children and Young People’s Services

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the role of Head of Education and Skills. This is a key leadership opportunity to work within a high-performing council, in a large and diverse county. County Durham’s education system is one of the largest in the country and this role is a career defining opportunity for an ambitious leader.

As an organisation, we have very high aspirations for our county’s children and young people. We want them all to enjoy excellent education and to develop the skills and resilience they need to succeed as they progress in life.

The role also leads our adult skills agenda and I believe there is a great opportunity to provide a co-ordinated pathway through education to employment with a particular focus on those young people that need additional support.

There is a real vibrancy around the council’s future aspirations for the county. We are the largest council in the region, and we are committed to playing a central role regionally and nationally. Our commitment to reducing inequalities will be even more important in the recovery from COVID-19 and this role will be crucial as we adapt and thrive in the future.

Reporting directly to me, you will be part of our strategic leadership team and will have a key role in collaborating with the wider team, Elected Members, and other stakeholders to shape the future vision and direction of the council. You will also be a key member of our extended management team of corporate leaders across the council. Relationships and credibility are essential, and you will have the skills and experience to thrive in a fast moving and varied environment.

Working together we can deliver on making sure that every child and young person in County Durham is inspired to reach their full potential.

I look forward to receiving your application to step into this exciting role.
