About the Role

Head of Education and Skills

Durham is a beautiful and diverse county. Our natural and cultural assets create opportunity, and we are working with partners to realise opportunities for local people and improve quality of life for our residents. Education and skills are at the heart of our vision to build an even brighter future for the county.

The primary purpose of this key role will be to develop services that ensure children are given the best start in life and are able to achieve their potential, to raise attainment and address the causes of inequalities in educational outcomes. The diversity of the county brings a range of opportunities and challenges that will provide a rewarding environment for an ambitious leader.

We want to provide the best education and skills training so everyone has the chance to achieve their potential. You will drive the implementation of the council’s priorities for education and skills, by supporting Members and senior officers in setting the overarching strategies for people of all ages.

You will help ensure that young people are able to progress successfully from education into the workplace, developing the knowledge and skills required by employers, achieving their ambitions and enabling people of all ages to contribute to a vibrant and thriving economy.  You will continue to build on our strong relationships with partners including schools, colleges, universities and other providers across our county.

The scale and scope of this role makes for a huge challenge, but also a fantastic opportunity. We’re looking for someone who has vision, energy, creativity, resilience and an absolute focus on delivering the best possible outcomes for residents, communities and the children and young people of our county. If that’s you, we want to hear from you.
